Crisis No. Yesterday Ford announced that its sales in the U.S. plunged . per cent last month Ford sales were down . per cent in Canada last month . That is a monumental drop in sales and it surely sent alarm bells howling in Dearborn Mich. Ford s headquarters. Crisis No. Just days ago billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian dumped enough of his Ford shares at a massive loss to make any further moves with his investment secret and not subject to regulatory filing. Kerkorian had bought billion worth of Ford at . a share all figures in U.S. dollars earlier this year. Late yesterday Ford was trading at . a share. Ouch. Now that s a loss. Worse it could have been interpreted as a vote of non confidence in Ford s turnaround though Kerkorian s people said he just wanted the cash for his other businesses. There have been other crises too the U.S. credit crunch first among them. This is a miserable time to be running a car company. But in the midst of this turmoil we learn that Ford is going to stay the course with its product plans. Good thing. The only chance Ford has of winning back unhappy customers is by completely reinventing its product portfolio. No small feat that. So many owners are so angry with Ford believe me I hear from them often. They are the ones who suffered broken Fords. They are the car buyers Ford abandoned when the company grew obsessed with the fat profits earned from sport utility vehicles and pickups. Well it looks like something has changed at Ford. Apparently CEO Alan Mulally is steering the Ford ship with a steady hand. Let me pause here for a moment. I ve liked Alan Mulally well enough in the brief interviews I have had. He seems friendly and down to earth. Not so his oversized pay packet. Even as Ford has lost billions . billion through June for this year alone Mulally has earned nearly million in compensation since taking the helm of the auto maker. On top of that Ford still allows Mulally and his family to use the company jet to travel between Dearborn Mich. and Seattle the former family home. Cost to Ford in . Having a family plane has we re told been a way to ease the burden of his move to Michigan from Seattle where he worked for Boeing. Wouldn t we all like to have the burdens of air travel eased by a private jet. But I digress. The point that is important here is that in this time of crisis Mulally and the Ford crew seemed to be staying calm. Ford spurned merger talks with GM for instance citing that sort of deal making as a distraction to the job at hand remaking the company into a real car company in the image of Toyota. We learn now that even as oil prices have sagged by per cent even as pump prices in the U.S. have eased Ford is not going to rethink the small car onslaught I wrote about just weeks ago in GlobeAuto. Mulally told Automotive News last week that fuel prices are going to remain relatively higher and that the new small cars Ford is planning for the next few years are still coming. The most important thing we can do is have a full complement of small and medium sized cars and utilities that complement our larger vehicles he said. So the subcompact Ford Fiesta is coming to Canada and the U.S. in as planned. More small cars including the European Focus and very likely the Kuga small SUV and possibly even the Ka microcar joint venture with Fiat are also on the way. The trick for Ford will be to make money on these small cars. That won t be easy. But Toyota and Honda somehow make money selling small cars so there has to be a way. Personally I have always thought Mulally s pay to be absurdly outsized. But that can be said of executive compensation in general these days. A few decades the average CEO earned about times what the average employee earned now it s more like times. Pay aside I have to give Mulally credit for having the courage and the confidence to keep driving Ford down the right road on the product side. Mergers Ford executives all say their biggest job is merging Ford into one global car company. At least one Detroit based auto maker appears to have found religion in car making. Mulally has had a major hand in this. If this keeps up I just may have to park my convictions about on executive compensation for an exception Mulally. He ll be one of the few CEOs to have actually earned his money with hard work and commitment and vision and courage. Time will tell. U.S. officials say attacks in Baghdad average about four a day down nearly percent from levels of late when Shiite Sunni fighting was at its high point and just before the U.S. troop surge that helped bring down violence in the capital. Tuesday s blasts came a day after a series of bombings killed people and wounded more underscoring the threat still posed by extremists. Other attacks also took place in Mosul where violence has spiked in recent months. In Baghdad a bomb hidden under a car blew up at a bus depot in the predominantly Shiite neighborhood of Mashtal on the east side killing people including two women. Twenty one were wounded in the attack authorities said. In the northern Shiite dominated district of Qahira four people were killed and eight injured when a roadside bomb exploded near a market police said. Also Tuesday one person died when a roadside bomb in central Baghdad targeted the convoy of a Shiite government official and former member of the Iraqi Governing Council. Ahmed Shiyaa al Barak who currently serves as the head of a government real estate commission escaped without injury. Five of his guards and four bystanders were injured police said. Assailants also gunned down a policeman in east Baghdad. Meanwhile in the northern city of Mosul a suicide bomber rammed his car into a passing police patrol injuring four officers police said. A roadside bomb killed one person and wounded another while gunmen shot dead a civilian and a policeman in separate drive by shootings officials said. Also an Iraqi soldier was injured when his patrol struck a roadside bomb and a gunman wounded a policeman in a separate incident. Elsewhere a mortar shell struck a house in Madain south of Baghdad killing a woman and her two young children police said. Near the city of Tikrit some miles north of the capital one civilian died in a road accident with coalition troops the U.S. military said. A second Iraqi died after being rushed to an aid station. Iraqi police said an American Humvee ran over four Iraqis while they were trying to hang a banner in the middle of a road killing two. The Iraqi officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release information to the media.
